Blog Tour: Second On The Right by Elizabeth Los

Synopsis

Spawned from an ancient promise, treachery and intrigue follow the protagonists through our
world and one lost to the waves. Bound by an invisible bond, they are thrust into a fantastical
world of pirates and demons.

James Benedict is a just man haunted by evil. Pushed to the edge, everything stripped from him,
a new man arises . . . a man whose name strikes fear into the hearts of all who hear it: "Captain
Hook".

Eileen Davis was a timid woman. Through a fateful cruise she finds herself in the company of
the Captain of the Mistral Thief. With his guidance, and the meddling of the local barista, she
eventually finds her inner strength.
Will the two of them unite through time to fulfill the promise of their ancestors or will tempers
ignite leading all to failure?

Character Interview Questions and Answers

1. Tell us a little about yourself. Who are you? What’s your role in Second On The Right?

James Robert Benedict, though now most know me as Captain James Hook. (winks) I’m captain
of the Jolly Roger.
My role? Hmm. Well, I would say husband to my soulmate and father of two beautiful children.
However, I’ve been told that Second on the Right is the story on my life? (shakes head) There’s
not much to tell. Before Eileen, I was nothing. Sure, we had some bumps along the way in
dealing with Pan. Then there’s my relative, a distant ancestor that is truly a, um, difficult man.

2. What’s the challenge you are trying to overcome in story?

There were many, so which to cover? We all undergo trial by fire, so to speak. We experience
challenges that hopefully we’ll overcome, emerging as a better person in the process.
Personally, I had gone through a major bout of depression. It was awful. I had contemplated
suicide on more than one occasion. While in the hospital, I knew it wouldn’t be possible. They
monitor everything. But at home? I had the plan in my mind long before I was discharged.
Dr. Gobran was kind and tried her best, but when you’re lost in that sinking feeling, that sea of
grief, only you can get yourself out of it. I mean, it helped that she tried, but ultimately it did
nothing for me.
The odd thing was, when I got home I felt numb, it was all surreal. I even had a dream that she
was still with me. (sighs heavily) The loss of a loved one has got to be the worst feeling in the
world. If it wasn’t for the old woman stopping by, I might have taken my life. But she seemed
to flip that around. By the time she left, I was angry. No, angry doesn’t even begin to cover it.
I was furious. I wanted blood for blood, a life for a life. I felt it was owed to me. Everything,
everything was taken from me. It wasn’t fair, so I was determined to make it fair in my own
way. In that moment, I had crossed over to a side I never thought was possible for me. I had been
pushed beyond my limits, I guess. I was willing to do anything to reach my goal. I didn’t care
who I hurt or used along the way.
When Benedict took noticed of my change, he called me a monster. I tried to ignore him and we
parted ways. But later, while in my cabin, I had more time to reflect on recent events. My eye
caught my reflection in the glass. It was as if I was looking at a complete stranger! Dark circles
around the eyes, an almost sinister sneer on the lips, hook for a hand, was that really me? That
thought, that image, will always haunt my memories.

3. Name one thing that you want and how far would you go to get it?

My family safe, that’s it. Eileen and my kids are more important to me than anything else in life.
I’d give up my career, my money, if it meant saving their lives.
How far would I go? (shifts uncomfortably) I believe I hinted at that enough in the previous
question. Unfortunately, Second on the Right is a bit too spot on when it came to my transition.
I’m not proud of that time in my life.

4. Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

Secretly, I’ve always fancied myself
a pirate. What young boy hasn’t pretended that in play? But I supposed I wanted it more than my
mates. In fact, I took up fencing early on, and continued through University. I was actually quite
good, winning a few championships along the way.
